Gate to the Great Buddha

Bagua Mountain, Changhua Taiwan. This is my daily cardiovascular workout area. I have lost count of how many times I have walked these steps. Just beautiful, especially in the evening. It is also a nice refuge during the hot summer months because the temperature here can be as much as 5-7 degrees cooler than down in the city. Love it!

Market Day

Everyday is market day in Changhua. I could sketch this place one thousand times and every time would be different. It’s hustle and bustle to the nth degree. I love the energy and so many colors, smells and characters. Noodler’s Ahab flex pen with carbon black ink and watercolor in a Moleskine watercolor journal.

Morning Rain Showers

Early morning rain shower at Kending harbor, Taiwan. The Taiwanese love to paint their boats in bright blues, greens and yellows. I didn’t do the colors justice here, but I wanted to convey that rainy day feeling. Noodler’s Ahab flex pen with Noodler’s black ink in a Molskine watercolor journal. I first inked the drawing and then applied successive washes of watercolor.

Taiwan Fishing Boat

100_4723 An old fishing boat tied up at Kending Harbor in Kending Taiwan. The frontal proportions of this old-timer is what caught my eye-don’t know why I drew it so small. It looked so top heavy and the bow was so narrow. You would expect it to topple over. There must be quite a mass under the waterline to balance it. I can’t imagine going out to sea in this quite small vessel. I flew airplanes for twenty years and faced some challenging situations, but the men who work these boats have more courage and fortitude than I ever had. They literally put their lives on the line to feed their family and make some pocket money. Taiwan has lost a few of these in the past. Great old boat! Roadside Fruit

My wife and I took a couple days R&R to the Guguan Hot Springs area. On the way, we saw this vender so my wife wanted to stop and take a look. What caught my eye and consequently made me want to sketch this little scene was the fact that the guys truck had "POWER STEERING" written on the door. Why would a manufacturer put that on the door. Would this be a key selling point for anyone buying a small utility truck Don't all trucks have power steering now. Just hit me funny so I wanted to sketch it. Just Enough Water for a Boat Cruise

This is my first post in a long time. I quit smoking and my whole life turned upside down. Took me a very long time to adjust to not having that handicap to rely on. But, I’m good to go now so onward and upward! China tourists buying tickets for a boat cruise on beautiful Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan. We are currently having an emergency low water reserve problem, but that doesn’t stop the tourist boats. Maybe, if the water gets low enough they can put wheels on the bottom of the boats and advertise it as a bottom tour. Get it? See the bottom like you’ve never seen it before and probably never will again.  Ink and wash using a Noodler’s Ahab Flex pen and Noodler’s ink in a Moleskine watercolor journal.
